Around the Island
An exciting story about the wreck of the Oliver Mowat, just opened to divers after more than 75 years at secret rest off Main Duck Island, and over 100 years after it sank. Billed “the holy grail of Ontario shipwrecks,” this is also a story about diving and divers and how they work. This gorgeous emerald green photograph comes courtesy of diver Kayla Martin.
The Ticket Tonight: County Reads
Tonight at 7pm at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Picton, the County Reads debate takes place. Five local readers champion five great books. Tickets $10 at any library branch and at the door. An entertaining preview of the proceedings: CBC’s Fresh Air interviewed Ernie Margetson and Karen Valihora for a few minutes early Sunday morning.
Our spring Books on Film series opens Monday 22 April at 7pm with John Schlesinger’s 1995 British ensemble comedy, Cold Comfort Farm, based on Stella Gibbons 1932 satirical novel. With Ian McKellen, Joanna Lumley, Rufus Sewell and Kate Beckinsale, the film is a treat. Tickets available at the Regent. If you’ve been hesitating, this is the last chance for a season pass to the books on film club, which includes three movie tickets and three book club events at the Gazette offices. You can purchase passes online.
