On the Cover: Sparking Joy

The Department of Illumination held a fundraiser last week, and announced it is in a financially precarious situation. Held on the night of the Flower Moon, the Picton garden party started the summer season on a festive note. The Department anticipates a series of events to sustain an arts organization that has become central to life in, not just Picton, but the County. Pictured, the Department’s spectacular new Night Watch installation at Base 31 opens June 14. The 8-acre wandering illuminated walk is a must-do.

A Heritage Economy

This week, the Gazette explores the idea of leveraging the County’s extraordinarily rich history into a full-fledged Heritage Economy in an interview with Peter Lockyer. “What if heritage came first?” he asks. “Not as an afterthought, not after the roads. But if it was the first thing we did, because it's the most important thing we have.”

Not a Drop to Drink

The case is clear. The municipality needs another water treatment plant — or two. Either new development pays for the bulk of it, or rate and tax payers will. While confronting these realities is daunting, there is an upside: a single WTP in Wellington would be a boon for those who live in Picton and Bloomfield.
