Picton Gazette Express
In a late-evening closed meeting last week, Council voted to try, once again, to settle out of court with Picton Terminals. The Gazette tries to account for an unaccountable situation.
Your local paper is only the latest casualty of Meta’s refusal to pay for the news in Canada. We are no longer able to share articles on Facebook or even run our Instagram account. But don’t worry, the Gazette has launched its own YouTube channel instead.
Available at bookstores, wineries, breweries and distilleries near you
The County’s newest book publisher, Assembly Press, launched County Social: Vignettes from Prince Edward County’s Craft Drinkmakers, edited by Natalie Wollenberg and Leigh Nash, at the Grange of Prince Edward last week. Attendees also enjoyed its award-winning wines. Ms. Wollenberg noted that her family was celebrating its tenth anniversary of living in the County: “we have never felt so a part of a community as we have here; the hospitality and camaraderie between entrepreneurs here is just truly touching.” Royalties from the sale of County Social will support Alternatives for Women. The Gazette will feature an excerpt in next week’s edition.
A Regency Garden Party
Queen Charlotte and her courtiers
Anxious bidding for a week in Spain, or perhaps a season at the Canadian Opera Company
BigLake Arts General Manager Miquel Serrano and partner James Miller hosted a Bridgerton-inspired garden party last weekend to raise funds for the Prince Edward County music festival. A string quintet featuring Festival Director Elissa Lee (violin) and festival favourite Trey Lee (cello) played in a gorgeous restored barn, followed by an auction for treats like a private dinner for eight or a week in Spain at a historic stone country house. None other than Queen Charlotte herself (Judith van Bastelaar, splendidly attired) deigned to grace the proceedings. The beautiful June afternoon of costumes and games raised an extraordinary $37,000. If you missed it, not to worry. BigLake hosts another fundraiser, at another barn, this time at Edwin County Farms on July 14. Tickets: Fundraiser: Concert in the Barn – Biglake Arts.
Council's latest about-face defies belief. It already tried to reach a settlement. Just last year. There was, shall we say, a sticking point.
The Weekend Ticket
Prince Edward Community Theatre’s The Red Velvet Cake War continues this weekend at Mount Tabor. Art in the County launches tonight, Thursday, at 7:30pm and continues to July 7. A Scoot/Skate 2 End Hate scooter and skateboard competition takes place at the Crystal Palace Saturday June 22 at 10:30am. A Path Forward hosts an open house with the artists at Macaulay Heritage Park on Saturday. Revel’s free community festival takes place at Macaulay Heritage Park June 24 all day. And finally, don’t miss Photographs by Ian Brown in the Barlow Room at the Royal Annex, 6 Ross Street in Picton, to the end of the month.
Just one of Ian Brown’s gorgeous photographs.
