Summer in the County
Fields of lavender beckon residents and visitors alike. This signature County festival signals summer is here.
Top News: Visit the County
The fledgling tourist organization’s Annual General Meeting was full of surprises. A new Community Partnership Fund, an in-person kiosk at the Picton Chamber of Commerce, and taking over the Arts Trail were just some of the announcements.
News: MAT Windfall
The Municipal Accommodation Tax is a 4% surcharge on the cost of a nightly stay in the County. It is collected by STA owners, bed and breakfasts, and hoteliers.
In 2023, the tax generated $1,568,466, including $46,000 in accrued interest. That’s an increase of over $300,000 from 2022, when the MAT generated $1.2 million.
Food and Drink: A Tasting Flight
The County's newest publisher, Assembly Press, launches its first book — a toast to local brewers, vintners and distillers.
Spearheaded by Leigh Nash, assisted by Debby de Groot and Andrew Faulkner, Assembly Press is an independent book publisher based in Prince Edward County. Its very first publication is County Social: Vignettes from Prince Edward County’s Craft Drinkmakers. Editors Natalie Wollenberg and Leigh Nash collected thoughts and stories, and even some recipes, from more than three dozen of the County’s wine, beer, cider and spirit-makers. They call it a “tasting flight.”
The Gazette this week features an excerpt from Stock and Row.
Books: A Sentimental Journey
Local Favourite Terry Sprague takes on loss — and the consolations of connection in The Two of Us. The book pays homage to a 14-year journey with his beloved Shih Tzu, Christie — and to the loss of the author’s wife, Nola. A must for any reader confronting loss.
A visual cornucopia, and yes, totally corny. But worth it for the Martini Video alone. And the link even works this week.
